Baldwin City Theater

Baldwin City Theater is a production of The Baldwin City CLEAR Foundation, a not-for-profit organization pledged to create and support activities that nurture community fellowship and family unity for the residents of Baldwin City and surrounding areas.

Community theatre offers unique opportunities. For example: High School and college productions are limited to a very narrow age group i.e.- people between the ages of 15 to 23 years of age.

The production "Music Man" was typical in that, those engaged in all phases of the production (144) had a range in ages from three to seventy seven years of age. Thirty youngsters' ages 3 to 17 years had active on-stage parts.

The Foundation's productions provide for children and parents to participate. At the same time they participate on a level playing field i.e., they participate in a "team" activity and are governed by the same "ground rules". This gives an opportunity for the children to see that regardless of age all must exercise self-discipline in order to achieve a successful end result. The children also see their parents responding to the direction from others in order to achieve successful results.

Further, since rehearsal time is about six weeks, it keeps children occupied and "off the streets". Small communities have very limited creative activities and theatre productions give all ages a chance to develop talents, and express their individuality. They also learn the benefits of group cooperation. All in all, it is a fun activity. Each person's contribution is recognized and shown to be important.

One major production is chosen to highlight children on stage. The productions showcase children in one or all areas of acting, singing and/or dancing. The dinner theatre is presented in the spring and is suitable for viewing by all age groups. The Melodrama is staged during a community wide celebration during the fall Maple Leaf Festival and this too is a production where families participate in all phases.
